Kenyans coming home will be confronted with new tax rules on personal effects at international airports after a raft of changes by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

The taxman has set maximum duty collected on personal items at Sh50,000 ($500) in guidelines that outline details of items to be subjected to the new customs taxes at points of exit and entry.

Duty will now be determined by a number of factors including where one acquired the goods, where they were made, what they are made of and the cost. Items inherited while abroad, those bought in duty-free shops, on ships, or
on the plane beyond the allowed limits shall face the new charges.
